This booklet is one in a series of 29 booklets documenting workshops held at the Fifth International Conference on Adult Education and provides an overview of the major issues discussed at a workshop on the role of culture and cultural institutions in adult education. Today adult education is being provided not only by educational institutions, but also by cultural institutions such as libraries and museums. Cultural institutions provide both informal individual learning as well as structured learning activities for groups of learners. This booklet provides an overview of adult learning in museums and discusses whether museums are facing a crisis. It points out that museums have been slow to adapt to changing teaching practices and principles and remain largely separated from the developments in adult education, although partnerships between museums and adult educators are becoming more common. This booklet also discusses the role of libraries in adult learning, as a resource of formal and non-formal learning. It focuses on broadening access to information through libraries and describes a project which focused on enhancing the role of libraries within communities. It concludes with a discussion about environmental and cultural heritage and the relevance of cultural learning in the context of current challenges.
